ILDP Study Abroad Program

ILDP Study Abroad Program allows students from ILDP member institutions to study at Hiroshima University for a period of one or two terms.

Available Courses

1. Course Work

Exchange students are eligible to take courses in most of the departments. Since the number of courses offered in English is limited, students will need to check the course list. Exchange students who have acquired advanced level of Japanese are eligible to take regular courses with other Japanese students.

*There are many exclusive classes in the field of medicine, law, teaching training courses exchange students might not be able to take.

2. Research Work

Hiroshima University has a state-of- the-art research environment where you will be able to focus on pursuing your research activities. Exchange students are eligible to engaged in his/her graduation research work under the mutual supervision by his/her professors of home university and an academic advisor at HU. The academic advisor gives many advices on your academic research.

Academic Calendar

Quarter system

Hiroshima University has adopted a Quarter system (a 4-term system). Under the  quarter system, an academic year is divided into 4 terms, with each term consisting of 8 weeks including an exam period.

CONTENTS of ILDP-SAP

Course work

The special auditing student needs to:

  1. Take any of the subjects offered by HU;
  2. Devote more than 10 hours per week (at least 7 subjects / 90 minutes per class) for a period to his/her assignments;
  3. and Join in activities organized by ILDP program and HU.

Research Work

HU expect students to devote a minimum of 30 hours per week for a period of 2 weeks to 6 months to his/her graduate research work at HU under the mutual supervision by his/her professors of home university and an academic advisor at HU.

Credit Transfer

Hiroshima University is actively promoting the use of the UMAP (University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific)Credit Transfer Scheme or UCTS in student exchanges.

All students enrolled in the ILDP-SAP will receive an academic transcript, which lists both the number of Hiroshima University credits and its equivalent in UCTS credit points.

UCTS defines; ONE (1) UCTS point = 38-48 hours of student workload. Moreover, these 38-48 hours of workload include 13-16 hours of lectures. ONE (1) credit at Hiroshima University will be considered as ONE (1) UCTS from now on.

[The Japanese government defines the concept of ONE credit in Japan is equivalent to 45 hours of workload, includes 15-30 hours of lectures and exercises, or 30-45 hours of experiments, practical training, and skills practice]

In case student wish to transfer credit, the procedures should be completed according to school regulations of home institutions.

Scholarship Information

Applicants are encouraged to apply for scholarship of Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO). The scholarships will be awarded to a few students who meet the following eligibilities and have passed a screening by ILDP steering committee.
Please be aware that you will receive a scholarship after coming to Japan.

Eligibilities

Students who;

  1. are officially nominated by ILDP partner universities to Hiroshima University;
  2. have nationality that has diplomatic relations with Japan;
  3. be required to be a full-time student at their home university during their study at Hiroshima University. If the student is expected to graduate from their home university before completion of the ILDP-SAP, he/she is not eligible to apply for the ILDP-SAP and the JASSO Scholarship;
  4. do not have sufficient financial means to study in Japan. In the case that the student is receiving a different scholarship from another organization, the total sum of the monthly provisions does not exceed 80,000 yen;
  5. and have a minimum GPA of 2.30 / 3.00 as calculated by using JASSO’s GPA calculation method* on the basis of grade transcript of previous academic year at home institution.

Process

Applicant must be nominated as an exchange student by your home institution. Direct applications from students to Hiroshima University or to JASSO are not acceptable.
  1. Student should read the qualifications section carefully and make sure you meet all of the requirements.
  2. Students who wish to nominate should fill out the application.
  3. ILDP will nominate the selected students for JASSO.
  4. JASSO will announce the successful applicants via HU.
